woman vs. nature

I love Hawaii but I can't stand how the humidity here doesn't do anything for your hair or face. It does wonders when you're having a beach day. But any other time, not really. Actually,I take that back, it does moisturize your skin. Being in San Diego for the holidays was amazing because I would get ready and then look the same hours later!
When I first moved to Hawaii, I couldn't figure out why I didn't look/feel the same here. Then it clicked when reading Erin Nelson's blog post sometime back when she said that make-up melts off your face. I couldn't agree more. You did your hair in curls and 10 seconds later it has turned into unenthusiastic waves.
Even though most days I don't care what I look like when I go off to work as a 75-year-old's hired friend... but the days I do care, I use this:

I discovered this little treasure while at my parents house during the holidays. It doesn't have the same creamy texture that regular conditioner has so don't be fooled. I was putting mass amounts in my hair at first because it felt like I hardly put anything in my hair. Be careful. When I found the perfect amount, it works like a charm. It does not lie when it states "Frizz control". It's perfect for a straight doo in Hawaii. They sell them at Costco for about $15 a bottle (pretty big bottles... it's Costco now). I find that pairing it up with el cheapo Suave shampoo and the Bed Head conditioner does it for me and keeps the cost low.

And when I want a really sleek doo, I use this:
Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum. Thank you oh dear roommate Cecily. Not only for doing my hair while I lived in Idaho but for introducing this lovely product to me. :) A drop (this too you have to be careful) of this rubbed into your hair before or after straightening works like a dream! $8 for a small bottle that lasts a really long time.

And my all time favorite hairspray that works anywhere is this:

I'm sorry the name's a little irreverent but it's Big Sexy Hair Spray. The only spray worth using for $12 a bottle. It's the only thing that can remotely keep my hair curled here. I usually get it at Nordstroms rack and this too lasts a long time. I think you can find knock-offs that probably work just as well. Believe me, if you haven't used this yet, it will surprise you.

I'm posting these items not to show you what you should use but because I have found these little treasures, I love using them here in this humid climate, and why wouldn't I share them with my friends?

As for make-up, I'm a little lost. I think mac is best for long lasting eye shadow but mascara, eyeliners, and foundation seem to "melt" all the same.
Any suggestions? I would love to try and find some more favorites!!

Cameron's -day post to come... my camera seems to be broken.

Loved the post! I use mac eyelash primer before I put my mascara on, My mascara never melts. The one day I didn't use it, there was meltage...mac fluidline never melts either(I'm sure you know what it is, if not eyeliner). I told you I'm obsessed.

Thanks for the tips! Honestly, my solution to the humidity is to just not put on make up or do my hair. lol. Its come to the point where people don't recognize me when I get dressed up. ha! It might be nice to try some of these products so I can actually have nice hair sometime. I know what you mean about california weather though. I curled my hair for the first time in....forever?...and it stayed all day!

Maybe ill pick up a bottle at costco next time I go! Ill let you know how it works!

I have a sneaky suspicion you would look beautiful with frizzy hair, black hair, or no hair.

But I've been needing a conditioner that goes a long way...so thanks!

YES!!! I love product posts, you best believe I will be buying all of this and trying it!!

makeup wise, I've found that liquid eyeliner works REALLY well, I have some from the spa, a brand called 'jane iredale' it's all mineral makeup and it works well. i also agree with vogels, the mac fluidline it's like stuck on tar once it's on, good thing it doesn't look like tar :)

and for the mascra, I use covergirl and it never melts off, in fact, it's pretty dang hard to even wash off, and it's not even waterproof!! try that!

As you know, I have the definition of frizzy hair.. So I am always on the lookout for good hair product, so thank you for the tips. I am going to have to try that conditioner. Just yesterday I used, for the first time, super skinny serum. It is so cool because it works for curley hair too. It makes so your curls dont frizz.. LOVE IT!
You can also get big sexy hairspray at costco 2 bottles for 10 dollars! Its a super deal.
P.S. your hair looks amazing no matter what you do.

I'm glad you found something that works for your hair!I miss doing your hair! The super skinny is an awesome product, and a top seller. A product I would recommend would be Paul Mitchell's Heat Seal. It helps block your hair from humidity, and gives thermal protection from blow dryers, irons, and such. It might help! If I find any other good products for hair in Hawaii, I will let you know :)

You could go with out ever getting ready and still look amazing!

my favorite shampoo/conditioner- "Pureology."
it's the best but will break your bank at $40 a bottle!
just tried "kenra" hairspray and it too is the bomb! "rave #4" at $3 bucks a bottle is great too!

ha, this is great. As someone who grew up in a humid place I never dried my hair in the summer, but as far as curls go, Aveda phomollient is the best mouse-type product I've ever used and pairing it with an aerosol spray after you're finished curling is the best result I've ever gotten. Oh and for face melting make up, I always used super super light moisturizer and the lightest foundation you can find, the stuff that almost turns to a powdery consistency when you put it on, there is a cover girl stick that works well...then the mac studio fix is the best setter. And I hate all the mac mascaras, they've melted on my face often, just go with a waterproof, those don't melt.

Have fun with the humidity, I don't mind it so much, my hair grows faster and my skin is softer...call me crazy...

Awesome suggestions. My hair has been lacking since we moved here and it really drives me nuts. I've given up on it, and that's why I re-do the same pony tail everyday, and wish I had cute hair like everyone else seems to have. I'll give these a try! Thanks! No suggestions on make-up. I gave up on that too.
